Baldur Brönnimann has been announced as the new Principal Conductor of the Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música from January 2015, succeeding Christoph König. Of the appointment, Brönnimann says:

“Over the last years I have got to know the OSPCM as a very flexible, committed and open-minded orchestra. I think we share many goals and ambitions, and I hope we’ll find a new cohesion, spirit, and sense of musical adventure in our collaboration over the next years. Casa da Musica stands for discovery and renewal and I hope to reinforce these values with everybody in the orchestra. I am very excited to go on this artistic journey together.”

The simultaneous appointment of Leopold Hager as Principal Guest Conductor marks an exciting moment for the Casa da Música, whose Artistic Director, António Jorge Pacheco, says: “For the next, important steps in the development of our symphony orchestra, we were looking for a team which would bring energy and experience in equal measure, and we believe that Baldur Brönnimann and Leopold Hager are a perfect combination.”

Brönnimann, who is held in the highest esteem by many of today’s living composers, was praised by Casa da Música’s Composer in Residence for 2014, Unsuk Chin: “It’s very exciting to work with him. He’s one of my favourite conductors”.

Bronnimann will conduct the orchestra a minimum of eight weeks per year in a wide range of repertoire, and will be involved in all aspects of their artistic development, touring and recording plans.
